They are used in Northern New Mexico and Souther Colorado during Holy Week, Good Friday to be exact. the female calavera (skeleton) in the cart is named "Dona Sebastiana", She carries a bow and arrow or spear sometimes for the purpose of punishment for the unrepentent souls. Traditionally she and the cart is paraded around the central square and as she passes you pick up a rock-confess your sins and place the rock in the cart to avoid her arrow.
